In 1998 I watched through one-way glass while a focus group discussed part-time faculty members in Washington State's community colleges. Our organization, the American Federation of Teachers, was probing to see if we could garner public support for a campaign directed at the state legislature to improve the salaries and benefits of part-time faculty members and to provide more full-time positions in Washington's community colleges.
