UF Position on the Proposal to Raise Caps

This email was sent Wednesday 9/30/2026 bcc to all full-time and adjunct faculty members.

Good morning, UF membership -

On behalf of the UF board, we would like to share with you our stance on class capacity changes.

We request of you, the UF membership, to refuse to engage or entertain any requests for how high you are willing to raise your caps until there is a proposal that takes a holistic approach to balancing our budget where the burden is shared on all levels, including at the executive level.

Here is our reasoning.

We want to reassure you that the administration cannot force the faculty to change class caps. Class cap increases are governed by the Instructional Council, and the administration can only request that we submit Curriculog proposals to raise caps for the classes in each of our individual departments.

We question how much money increasing class caps will actually save, and we see this as an approach that will primarily target adjunct faculty. This needs to stop. The burden of solving this budget shortfall should not be carried on the backs of our most vulnerable faculty. We are willing for the faculty to take part in a discussion about raising class caps, but this needs to be part of a holistic budget analysis that also takes into consideration increases in administrative salaries and other non-instructional costs.

To give greater perspective, the cost of administrative salaries have outpaced that of faculty salaries for the better part of this decade. Since 2018, the total cost of faculty salaries have increased 50.1%, classified staff increased 40.5%, and all other administration salaries increased 80.3%. Some of that is due to COLAs, but much of that administrative growth is due to raises and additional positions.

The first All-Instruction meeting will be held this Thursday at 12:00 in Salish Hall 110, and this will be a topic of discussion. We encourage you to attend, and you can submit questions in advance.

  • Please ask for updates on the questions we asked in the VPAA all faculty meetings held last year about the budget cuts at the administrative and executive level, as we are still waiting for a response
